Every Child Deserves a Home Adoption is a loving way to build families and give new hope to children without parents. Doug and Charisse Skinner opened up their home and built a wonderful family. This is their story. Doug and Charisse Skinner found love through DePaul Family Services’ Adoption Program. Charisse was formerly a Social Worker with DePaul and had worked with foster children. However, both Charisse and Doug believed they could to do more. They wanted to become foster parents and in August 2002, Heath (then age 9) became their foster child. Doug and Charisse knew they wanted to make him a permanent member of the family and began the adoption process. At the same time, though, they were in for a surprise because Charisse learned she was pregnant. Charisse recalls that the upcoming arrival of a new baby was scary for Heath. “He was afraid that when the baby came, we would no longer want him.” The Skinners assured Heath that he was loved and would always be a part of their family. On March 11, 2003, the Skinners welcomed two new permanent family members. That day baby Levi was born and Heath’s adoption was finalized. In November 2003, the Skinners once again opened their home. This time it was to eleven year old Desaree. Immediately everyone knew Desaree needed to be a permanent member of the family. “Heath and Desaree get along like any other brother and sister…they fight like cats and dogs” said Charisse. “However, you know they love each other and both are adored by their little brother Levi.” Unfortunately, adoption was not Desaree’s official goal, so it was a much longer process for her. While waiting for Desaree’s adoption to be completed, the Skinners had another surprise. Charisse was pregnant again. “We had similar issues with Desaree as we had with Heath regarding a new baby” said Charisse. “We just let her know she was loved and we were committed to adopting her.” In early 2006, Desaree’s adoption was finalized. The family also welcomed baby Evan in March 2006. The Skinners may have their hands full with two 13 year olds, a 3 year old and a new baby but they wouldn’t have it any other way. |
